What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a strong, incredibly aesthetic and highly effective way to fill the gap left by one or more missing teeth. They are a truly modern and innovative dental restoration, able to regain the look, feel and function of stable natural teeth for the long term.

An implant exactly replicates a fixed tooth root, and consists of a strong titanium post placed into your jawbone to support a beautifully natural looking crown on top. Titanium is very well tolerated by the human body, enabling the implant to fuse to the surrounding bone in the jaw and become a solid and long lasting foundation.

What does dental implant treatment involve?

Your dental implant journey can be lengthy, involving several appointments and healing time, but it will be more than worth it once you see your new smile for the first time!

Initially, we see you in our clinic for a full consultation appointment. We examine your teeth and gums and ensure you are suitable for treatment. We create your treatment plan and discuss it with you in detail to make sure you are happy with each step, including estimated costs and timescales.

Using our innovative digital equipment, we take state-of-the-art scans and images to help us plan the optimum position for your implant and ensure your treatment is incredibly accurate. If you need any preparatory treatment, we carry this out at this stage.

At your fitting appointment in our practice, the titanium implant is placed into your jawbone by our experienced and precise team. We use local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort and the surgery does not take long. Your implant will take around 3-6 months to heal and correctly fuse to your bone, so we place a temporary tooth to protect your gum during this time.

When your implant has fully healed, and a solid foundation has formed, we fit your final tooth on top and let you see your stunning new smile for the first time. We make sure you are completely happy before giving you some tailored advice on how to care for your implant and leaving you to start smiling!

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have dental implants?

Most people will be suitable candidates for dental implants, providing they are in good general and oral health. There are some limitations, including a lack of bone in the jaw to support an implant, but this can be rectified with a bone graft or similar procedure. If you are interested in having a dental implant, please talk to us. We will make sure you are able to have an implant and give you the chance to ask any questions at your initial consultation.

Does it hurt to have dental implants?

The placement of your dental implants shouldn’t hurt, as we use local anaesthetic during the surgery so you won’t feel any pain. After your procedure, you will likely feel some discomfort for the first few days, which can be managed with pain medication as advised by your dentist. You should be able to return to your normal routines the day after treatment.

How long will my dental implants last?

Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime, provided they are properly taken care of. They deliver stability and support, allowing you to regain complete function, as well as looking and feeling completely natural. It is important to brush and floss your teeth twice a day and attend regular dental check ups to maintain your implant.

Will I still be able to talk and eat with a dental implant?

You will most likely find that it is much easier to talk and speak once you have a dental implant fitted! A missing tooth can really affect your confidence, but an implant eliminates the worry about speaking in public or having to avoid certain foods, and gives you a reason to smile again.

Do dental implants look natural?

Dental implants are the most natural looking restoration available. They look, feel and act just like natural teeth, and won’t slip or move when you eat or speak. We carefully and accurately match the shade, shape and size of your existing teeth when creating your replacement tooth so it blends beautifully into your smile. No one will be able to tell!

How do I look after my dental implant?

The best way to look after your dental implant is to treat it as a natural tooth and brush and floss twice a day. The implant itself cannot decay, but it is important to keep the surrounding gum and natural teeth healthy. It is also important to attend regular check up appointments with your dentist so they can keep an eye on your implant.

Are there any alternatives to dental implants?

The alternatives to dental implants for replacing missing teeth are bridges and dentures. These restorative treatments certainly fill the gap in your smile, and are a more affordable option, but don’t provide the same superior strength and aesthetics. They are also not likely to last as long. Please talk to us about your options for replacing your missing tooth.
